Job Description

Job Summary

The Fire & Life Safety Inspector conducts monthly and annual safety inspections and testing of fire and life safety equipment to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and standards.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Inspects buildings and areas of public assembly to check for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment, adequacy of fire exits, and for general compliance with fire prevention codes. Completes inspection reports.
  • Inspects for proper installation and maintenance of fire protection and alarm systems for compliance with approved plans.
  • Receives and responds to complaints/questions from other agencies and/or the general public regarding fire/safety violations and recommends necessary adjustments. Interprets and/or explains fire safety codes and other related ordinances.
  • Works in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal and other external local agencies.
  • Issues notices of code violations. Advises occupants regarding appropriate corrective action.
  • Reviews building and construction plans for compliance with fire safety codes, building codes, and ordinances. Approves or rejects plans and maintains related documentation and files.
  • Consults with and advises architects, engineers, developers, contractors, crafts/trades workers regarding fire safety codes and other related ordinances.
  • Conducts research in preparation of code violation cases.
  • Performs laboratory audits and/or environmental site inspections to ensure compliance.
  • Supports investigations related to fire/life safety.
  • Manages the collection, tracking, and maintenance of life safety inspection violations and records, develops and provides regular and ad hoc reports for the analysis of inspection life/fire safety violation data, along with written and verbal recommendations regarding life safety prevention initiatives.
  • Provides in-service training and facilitates meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of identifying issues, developing recommendations, and supporting staff. Serves as a resource to staff, campus community, and general public.

  • Assists department and University colleagues with other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either five years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, an Associate's degree from an accredited institution in Safety, Fire Science, Emergency Management or closely related field and three years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Full-time experience in implementing fire and life safety programs for a higher education, research, or similar institution.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
  • Experience operating a personal computer and proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook).
  • Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Safety, Fire Science, Emergency Management or closely related field.
  • Florida Certified Fire Inspector.
  • Completion of a recognized fire/life safety certification.
  • Two years of relevant, full-time experience in implementing fire and life safety programs for a higher education, research, or similar institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of all fire safety laws, rules, and regulations, codes, and the Florida Fire Prevention Code.
  • Thorough knowledge of regulations and standards associated with life safety and hazardous material use and storage.
  • Skill in fire investigation and in recognizing fire code violations and hazardous conditions.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and building diagrams, plans, and blueprints, recognize deviations from such plans, and recommend correction as required by the Florida Fire Prevention Code, and Building Code.
  • Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and operations at any stage of installation or construction.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement in the interpretation, application, and enforcement of all codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records, files, and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training presentations and programs.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies.
