POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:

The incumbent fabricates, assembles, installs, and repairs mechanical/sheet metal/plumbing products and equipment. This position is required to work nights, overtime, and rotating schedules. This person manages field labor crews with varying levels of experience, and executes production, safety, and quality goals.

KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assembles pipe sections, tubings, and fittings using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing, and/or welding equipment.
  • Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water/air and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
  • Locates and marks the position of pipe installations, connections, penetrations, and fixtures in structures using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels.
  • Measures, cuts, threads, and bends pipe using hand power tools or machines.
  • Cuts openings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings using hand and power tools.
  • Installs underground storm, sanitary, and water piping systems.
  • Inspects equipment, structures, and materials to identify the cause of errors, safety hazards, or other issues, and solutions or escalates them appropriately.
  • Shears, forms, handles, bends, and welds thin sheet metal during the fabrication process.
  • Loads and unloads trucks of material to be staged and installed throughout the jobsite.
  • Hangs steel supports from ceiling joists and concrete slabs to hold material and/or equipment in place.
  • Drills holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets. Installs metal ducts with supportive frameworks.
  • Fabricates or alters parts at construction sites on an as-needed basis.
  • Fastens seams and joints by welding, bolting, or riveting.
  • Reviews blueprints and specifications to determine work sequence and effective, safe procedures.
  • Inspects and ensures the availability of all tools and materials needed to complete a given project.
  • Facilitates knowledge transfer and teaches trade skills to less experienced tradespeople.
  • Keeps records of assignments and produces detailed work reports.
  • Directs workers in (pre-) installation of piping, sheet metal, plumbing systems and components.
  • Directs craft labor in cutting, pre-assembly, and installation of HVAC components, both in new structures or as a modification to an existing system.
  • Studies building plans and inspects structures to assess material and equipment needs, establish the sequence of installations, and plan installations around obstructions such as wiring, plumbing, etc.
  • Completes all Activity Hazard Analysis' (AHA) and daily huddles, and pre-plans work to ensure safety, productivity, and quality.
  • Works with the General Superintendent to develop 4-week look ahead schedules and provide updates.
  • Manages employee schedules, and ensures all time is recorded and reported via the proper channels.
  • Ensures basic hand tools for the trade position are present/available for use during every work shift.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This position operates primarily in the field. Jobsite work is likely to entail varying exposure to weather, potentially harmful materials or chemicals, fumes, odors, noise, dangerous machinery, and/or other conditions typically associated with a live construction site.
  • Depending on the work location, the incumbent may be exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, noise, poor ventilation/lighting, and other hazards or conditions typically associated with a construction job site.

TRAVEL:

  • This position may require up to 50% travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school, vocational school, or training equivalent.
  • 5-8 years of mechanical, sheet metal and plumbing experience.
  • Must have basic hand tools for the trade position in every work shift.
  • Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions under limited supervision.
  • Must be construction-document and drawing literate, with knowledge of all phases of construction.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, tools, and equipment employed in the joining, jointing, cutting, bending, threading of all types of HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • General knowledge of the hazards of the trade and necessary precautionary measures.
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, overtime and rotating schedules on an as-needed basis.
  • Capacity to leverage leadership skills to facilitate learning, teamwork, and collaborative relationships.
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) with diverse audiences.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office and Google products.
  • Valid Driver's License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Rigging and Signaling Certification.
  • Forklift Certification.
  • Aerial and Scissor Lift Certification.
  • Completed OSHA 30-Hour Training.
  • Current First Aid/CPR Certification.
