Position Description

Typical Essential Duties

  • Supervises and coaches at intercollegiate competition as appropriate;
  • Ensures compliance with all required FCCAA and NJCAA rules and regulations;
  • Directs training and practice program(s) for the team(s);
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate team conduct;
  • Keeps individual and team statistics and records as required;
  • Supervises the academic progress of team members, and arranges for special assistance necessary to improve the likelihood of students' academic/career success;
  • Develops schedules and support budget recommendations within guidelines;
  • Makes travel arrangements for team within available resources;
  • Drives college vehicles to and from activities as needed;
  • Advises students concerning the choice of academic courses to meet their goals;
  • Refers students to counselor for any problem which needs to be examined other than academic, such as vocational testing, personal counseling, etc.
  • Assists students in registration process.
  • Fosters academic excellence in teaching and learning;
  • Serves the college through any of the following: (a) committee membership, (b) curriculum development, (c) development of innovative instruction, (d) sponsorship of student organizations, (e) representation of the college in professionally related community activities, and (f) special projects;
  • Supports college extracurricular functions;
  • Maintains currency in teaching field(s) through professional development and scholarly activities.

The classification is responsible for planning and directing the activities of an athletic team with a coaching staff of four or more full time employees. Responsibilities may include supervising a staff of full-time and part-time coaches; and performing the duties of the lower level.

  • Considerable knowledge of the type of sport assigned.
  • Managerial principles;
  • Athletic principles;
  • Sporting skills in assigned area of responsibility;
  • Principles associated with nutrition, training, biomechanics, and body types;
  • Instructional methods;
  • Collegiate athletics rules, regulations, and requirements;
  • Budgeting principles;
  • Public relations principles;
  • Computers and related software applications.

Skills:

  • Leadership skills and mentoring ability a must;
  • Ability to coach and lead a team.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the work of employees;
  • Prioritizing and assigning work;
  • Instructing student athletes on skills and strategies in assigned athletic area;
  • Evaluating athletic facilities for safety and maintenance requirements;
  • Applying college rules, regulations, and requirements;
  • Implementing public relations initiatives;
  • Evaluating athlete strengths and weaknesses;
  • Using a computer and related software applications;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Physical:

  • Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to blood and other bodily fluids, extreme temperatures, and travel.
