Job Description

General Summary of Position
Provides medical interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) or the Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and families/care takers. Ensures language access and culturally sensitive care for patients and families requiring communication accommodation in hospital and outpatient settings. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MGUH philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interprets medical and other related patient-care information (target language skills requirements listed below)
  • Provides medical interpretation to facilitate culturally appropriate, clear understanding and direct communication between providers and Limited English Proficient (LEP) or Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients and families as stipulated by MGUH Policy 452.
  • Informs and/or educates providers and staff on culturally sensitive matters that may affect the delivery of patient care.
  • Provides written translation for simple documents as requested.
  • Supports and interfaces with members of the department to assist as requested/needed with any aspect of interpretation, communication or coordination services.
  • Promotes GUH, its language access and its services to the LEP and Deaf and Hard of Hearing populations through daily interaction, communication, presentations and community outreach. Develops and promotes language access and cultural accommodation through creation and participation in orientation and in-service sessions.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Associate's degree required
    • Bachelor's degree preferred

    Experience

    • Minimum of 1 year of experience interpreting in a medical setting. required
    • 3 years experience preferred

    Licenses and Certifications

    • National certification in medical interpreting as available and applicable required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Bilingual oral and written fluency in English and target language/s;
    • Ability to identify and address obstacles to high-quality patient care and satisfaction;
    • Ability to work in multi-culturally diverse environment;
    • Knowledge of medical terminology;
    • Ability to diffuse stressful circumstances;
    • Well-developed listening and interpreter skills;
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and Excel.
