The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Maintenance Mechanic - Aviation Department

The Aviation Department which operates the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and the North Perry Airport is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Mechanic. Incumbents in this position are needed to inspect, maintain and perform all preventative maintenance on Jetways. Additional responsibilities include performing preventative maintenance on all Airport sliding glass doors, fire extinguishers, perimeter gates and overhead doors throughout the terminals and concourses. Maintenance Mechanics also participate in the installation and maintenance of all types of equipment including refrigeration and other mechanical systems. The Airport's Maintenance Division operates on a 24/7 schedule with three 8 hour shifts, unless otherwise determined by operational needs. The shifts rotate annually with shift bidding by seniority. This is an exciting fast paced work environment with shift work over a 5-day work schedule with two consecutive days off during the week.

All Aviation Department employees must possess the ability to interact courteously with the public, Airport vendors, contractors and fellow employees to maintain a professional work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes a positive work environment.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires two (2) years experience in industrial or commercial maintenance working on large equipment and mechanical systems.

Special Certifications and Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida E Class Driver's License with authority to drive a county vehicle for duration of employment
  • Must be able to obtain/maintain Airport Security Badge with Customs Seal.

Additional Information

All candidates must complete an extensive ten (10) year work history verification and criminal background check. Per the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 1542, all airport employees must undergo a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and a Security Threat Assessment (STA) in order to obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, as required by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Participates in the installation, alteration, operation and maintenance of generators, air conditioning, refrigeration and other mechanical systems; performs blacksmith functions including metal forging, shaping and sharpening; uses lathes, drill presses and other metal working power tools.

Act as Lead Worker for semi-skilled employees; instructs subordinate helpers in the proper care and use of tools; instructs subordinates in procedures and methods of maintenance and repair.

Keeps record of materials used and makes estimates of time required for assigned tasks.

Supervises and performs preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment, including pumps, compressors, combustion engines, gasoline motors, heating and air conditioning equipment and other major mechanical hydraulic units of equipment; performs general plumbing and electrical work related to equipment.

Makes estimates of time and materials for assigned tasks; makes sketches for subordinates to follow; inspects work for quality and conformance to specifications and instructions; keeps time and work records; prepares and submits reports.

Performs preventative maintenance, service and inspection of jet bridges, perimeter gates and motor drives, fire extinguishers, sliding glass doors and fixtures, garage doors and replaces missing broken or outdated equipment.

Repairs and clears bag belt system, performs restart and inspection of elevators and escalators.

Performs general maintenance such as replacing air filters, pressure cleaning, replacing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, fixing roof leaks.

Performs preventative and routine facilities maintenance and repairs, to include general maintenance, plumbing and/or electrical repairs, HVAC and/or carpentry based on area on assignment.


Performs related work as assigned.
