Company OverviewSince Howard P. Harlan founded Harlan Laboratories, Inc. in 1931, it has provided quality laboratory animals and preclinical research services to support the scientific community. Based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Harlan now produces over 250 stocks and strains of laboratory animals. From 1931 until the time of his death in 1961, Mr. Harlan expanded his business and supplied pharmaceutical firms and universities throughout the Midwest. In 1961, Hal P. Harlan, his son, assumed responsibility for the operations. The business was incorporated in 1962 under the name of Harlan Industries, Inc. In 1972, Harlan Industries, Inc. constructed its first barrier breeding facility equipped to produce the highest quality laboratory animals available in the industry.Between 1974 and 1976, two additional barriers were built, increasing the total production area to 40,000 square feet. During this time, Harlan Industries, Inc. developed a skilled management team and increased the staff from 15 employees in 1972 to over 120 by the end of 1978. Today, the Indianapolis facility serves as the Harlan World Headquarters, housing the National Customer Services Center, the Corporate Computer Administrative Center, and three maximum-security animal barriers.
